Virgin Australia planes to be serviced in Nelson

A fleet of Virgin Australia's turboprop planes are now being serviced at Air New Zealand's regional maintenance facility in Nelson.

Air New Zealand chief operations officer Bruce Parton said it had signed a five-year contract with Virgin Australia to overhaul 14 ATR aircraft in Nelson. 

The regional hub is fast becoming a centre for heavy maintenance, which involves aircraft being taken apart every 18 months to two years for inspection and overhaul.

Five Virgin aircraft would arrive in Nelson for heavy maintenance during 2017.
