Nelson Airport is set to begin construction of a new covered walkway that will boost passenger comfort and reduce emissions.
The 130m extension to the walkway leading from the terminal to southern aircraft parking stands incorporates nearly 200 roof-mounted solar panels, acting as a small on-site energy generator.
Airport Chief Executive Brendan Cook said the extension would provide a better customer experience for passengers boarding aircraft on the southern stands, providing shelter from the weather and sound buffering.
“It also means a consistent boarding experience whether you’re choosing to fly with our national carrier or one of the smaller regional airlines operating from Nelson, and is part of our commitment to supporting the operations of all our airline partners.”
Brendan said the solar array was expected to generate enough energy to offset 12% of the annual power usage of the terminal, providing electricity cost savings and reducing emissions.
“Electricity is the airport’s biggest direct controllable contribution to emissions, and we’re committed to reducing that impact wherever we can.”
Work is set to begin next week, and will continue through to late 2026. The existing container walkways will remain in place until the extension is complete, with temporary paths created for passengers to access aircraft during construction.
“There will be some construction noise and changes to access to aircraft throughout the works, and we’d like to thank our customers and operators for their patience while we carry out these improvements.”
