The best spots

Nelson Airport has six dedicated plane spotting locations around the precinct and Perimeter Walkway, allowing for unobstructed views of aircraft, the landscapes and the terminal through our security fence. Each location has an information panel specific to that spot to help you take the best photos.

See the interactive map below for the best locations around Nelson Airport including the plane spotting panels.

Tips, tricks, dos and don’ts

  • The Airport Perimeter Walkway is a loop of approximately 5 kilometres. The walk is flat and easy, but is not a sealed track the whole way around so can be uneven in places.
  • Aircraft always land and take off into the wind. Take this into account when choosing your locations and planning your photos. It pays to check the weather.
  • Visit all of the lens panels and see what your favourite location is.
  • Sunrises, sunsets and even nights can add extra dimensions to your photography.
  • Please be considerate of other plane spotters and other perimeter walkway users.
  • Drones are strictly prohibited around Nelson Airport as they pose a risk to aircraft.
  • Make sure you tag Nelson Airport in any photos you upload to social media! If you have any extra special photos and would like to share them please send them through to promotions@nelsonairport.co.nz
