Airfield Gate Access
Airfield gates are controlled using an electronic padlock system (SALTO). which runs on our Gallagher access control platform. This system ensures easy access for authorised users while maintaining a secure, controlled airfield.
How it works
Authorised users are issued with either a smart key card or smartphone credential. Scan the SALTO lock with your electronic swipe card or phone to open the gate. Either turn the SALTO lock 180 degrees or twist the SALTO padlock to open the gate.
Keeping your credentials up to date
Nelson Airport undertakes a 12-week audit on all electronic swipe cards. To remain enabled, you must use your card at least once within the 12-week period. If you don’t use the card within this timeframe, it will be disabled and you will need to contact our Customer Service or Airport Emergency Service team to have it re-activated. This is a security measure to reduce the likelihood of old or unnecessary access cards remaining in circulation and to maintain the integrity of the access control system.

Apply for an access card
For non-urgent access applications, please use this form or contact Nelson Airport Customer Services on 021 997 494. You must read the following terms and conditions, and acknowledge your acceptance of these by ticking the box in the form. You will also need to list the airside gates you require access to. You can view a map of the gates by clicking the link below.
Please note, access cards don’t provide airside access through internal doors in the Nelson Airport terminal.
Terms and Conditions
The authorised holder is responsible and accountable for the security of the Access Card.
The authorised holder will ensure all terms, conditions and safety instructions are complied with at all times.
The authorised holder will return the card to Nelson Airport if directed.
The authorised holder will ensure that no unauthorised person gains access to the airside area by use of the authorised holder’s Access Card
The authorised holder accepts liability for all costs, legal or otherwise, arising from any action by the authorised holder, or any person obtaining access through the Access Card issued to the authorised holder, that inhibits airport operations or affects the safety of any person or property.
The authorised holder accepts liability for all costs associated with the misplacement or loss of the Access Card issued to that person. Replacement cards will incur a 25 + GST fee payable by the applicant.
The authorised holder will return the Access Card to Nelson Airport as soon as their need to access the terminal and/or airside gates ceases.
