Nelson Airport is calling all plane spotters to take part in its popular annual Plane Spotting Photo Competition.
Now in its third year, the competition offers aviation enthusiasts of all ages to enter their favourite photos for the chance to win a range of incredible prizes, including flight vouchers, flying lessons and more. The competition is judged by local Visual Journalist and aviation photographer Martin de Ruyter. This year, he’ll be joined by special guest judge, aviation content creator Sophea Ngoun (IG @aviation.newzealand / TT @aviation_newzealand).
Nelson Airport Communications Manager Beth Catley says the competition gives plane spotters of all ages and stages a platform for sharing their love of flight.
“It’s been hugely popular since we introduced it in 2023, with about 80 entrants last year. We have a youth category for under-18s, as well as a Smartphone section, so it’s something anyone can take part in – you don’t need to be an expert with lots of expensive gear.”
Beth said the wider airport community had swung in behind the concept, providing all the prizes. “Our tenants love being part of this and are so generous every year with the donated prizes. There’s a lively plane spotting community in Nelson and this is our way of supporting and providing a platform for that passion.”
As well as the top prize, the Overall winner of the competition will get their photo framed and displayed in the Nelson Airport terminal.
This year’s prizes include:
$500 flight voucher with Sounds Air
Boeing B737-800 simulator experience with Nelson Aviation College
Trial flights with Helicopters Nelson, the NZ Aviation Academy and Nelson Aero Club
An exclusive ride on the Nelson Airport runway in the Nelson Airport Emergency Service fire truck
